- The Rise of Brahmanism, Professor Johannes Bronkhorst (WFz.KPSC-8633, 5 ECTS, 30 hours, course starts in April and ends in May).

Brahmins play a central role in Indian society and religion. The traditional view is that this has always been like that from Vedic times onward. A closer inspection of the evidence shows that the situation is more complicated. Brahmanism was a regional ideology that went through a crisis during the centuries preceding the Common Era. The Brahmanism that came out of this difficult period was in many respects quite different from what it had been before. In this new shape it interacted with other cultures and religions, and succeeded in spreading over the whole of South-Asia and into Southeast-Asia. This spread took place without the help of armies, missionaries or empires.
This course will study and analyse the factors responsible for this remarkable development, perhaps unique in human history.

- The comparative study of religion: a new approach, Professor Johannes Bronkhorst (WFz.KPSC-8632, 5 ECTS, 30 hours, course starts in April and ends in May)

The comparative study of religion brings to light behaviours and beliefs that are different in different societies and yet share certain features. This course starts from the assumption that the shared features require an explanation in terms of the way the mind function. It will propose a model of mental functioning that accounts for a number of behaviours and beliefs that are commonly associated with religion, among these asceticism, sacrifice and belief in a transcendent reality.
