Wykład: "On Muslim religiosity in South Asia", Prof. Dušan Deák (Comenius University Bratislava)

Zapraszamy

Katedra Porównawczych Studiów Cywilizacji zaprasza na wykład gościnny:

On Muslim religiosity in South Asia

Prof. Dušan Deák (Comenius University Bratislava)

The development of Islam in South Asia has been interpreted along two basic and radically different perspectives: one referred it to the global side of Islam, the other to the multitude of diverse regional modalities of Muslim practitioners‘ beliefs and practices. These two approaches also tend to mirror the centuries long debate among the Muslims themselves.  The presentation by Prof. Deak shall offer a review of the most influential concepts applied in interpreting the presence of Muslims and Islam in South Asia. He will argue that the binary of the 'global' and the 'regional' can be avoided if the processes of creating the community of monotheists are heeded in their productive detail. Such approach enables the forms of beliefs and practices marked as hybrid, syncretic, or plainly unislamic to be understood under the rubric of Islam that is more lived than imagined. The talk will illustrate its argument on the example of Muslim traditions pertaining to religiosity propagated by the Muslim holy men of Western India.
