Culture, Animal Ethics, And Environmental Philosophy (WFz.KPSC-8719, 2 ECTS, 10 hours, 5 lectures total, classes take place in May) by Professor Stefan Sencerz, Ph.D  (Texas A&M University, USA).

What does it mean to have a moral standing? Does a moral standing come in degrees?

Do animals have a moral standing? Is it the same as the moral standing of humans?

Do we have moral duties to animals and nature? Or can we use them in any way that suits us? On what foundations should we rest our concern for rainforests, marine ecology, natural landscapes, and endangered species?

We will approach these sorts of questions by putting them in their historical, religious, and cultural contexts and then revealing and ex-amining presuppositions that underlie specific answers to them. Standard philosophical techniques (e.g., pointing to hidden contradictions) will be used to explore rational answers to moral issues concerning the growth of the human population, consumption of natural resources, trophy hunting, experiments on animals, raising them for food, and generally our attitudes to nature. It is worth noting that Stefan enjoys bilingual conversations, Polish jazz and pierogi.
