6th Cracow Maya Conference
On the Road Again: Migration, Pilgrimage and Movement in Mesoamerica
16-19 of February 2017

Both recent as well as past events from our collective history show how the movement of people has the potential to re-draw the cultural, linguistic and ethnic maps of different regions of the world. Such migration stimulates cultural diversity and growth, but also affects the economy, leads to the rise of new political or cultural entities as well as the fragmentation and collapse of others communities, or polities. The topic of the upcoming Cracow Maya Conference is centered on movements and migrations across time in the whole of Mesoamerica. Papers presented during the conference will be concerned with such subjects as pilgrimage, migration and movement across distinct cultural areas of Mesoamerica. These papers may consider both the physical movement of people in the context of ritual events, trade expeditions, military incursions as well as the movement of ideas, iconographic elements, artefacts and other cultural goods. Another important topic to be included in the 6th CMC is the question of adoption and absorption of these new elements/incomers by host communities that were subject to such outside influences.

BEGINNER WORKSHOP:
“The Maya on the Road: Movement Motifs in the Classic Maya Inscriptions” by Ivan Savchenko & Dorota Bojkowska

A key objective of the present workshop is teaching the principal skills necessary for reading the Maya hieroglyphic script. Hopefully these skills should let everyone desirous work unaided on the Classic Maya hieroglyphic inscriptions, read it and understand it without the hassle. Therefore the emphasis of the workshop is reading of the authentic inscriptions carved by the Classic Maya on the ancient monuments. At the same time, the workshop will impress not only the beginners, but also the skilled participants. Conceptually the workshop is related to one of the most important motifs of the Classic Maya hieroglyphic inscriptions – the motif of road, of path, of movement. We will discuss the main verbs related to the moving and to the movement which appear in the Maya inscriptions. We will talk about the most famous journeys of the Maya kings and elites. We will discuss some associated rituals. And we also will note some fascinating metaphors related to the image of path and road. All of the participants receive its own copy of workbook with a wide additional data which includes some grammatical clarifications, a chart of glyphs, annex about the Maya calendar and a corpus of the Maya hieroglyphic texts. The workshop will be conducted in English. Other available languages during classes: Spanish, Polish and Russian.

MAYA WORKSHOP I:
"OCH U-CH’EE’N: The Greatest Classic Maya Military Campaigns" by Dmitri Beliaev & Alexander Safronov

This workshop will explore key problems of the Maya warfare of the Classic period, such as aims, scope, geographical extent and logistics of military conflicts in the Southern Lowlands. Despite the popular point of view that Maya wars were short-time conflicts or raids aimed to the captive taking for sacrifices, we will demonstrate that large-scale well-organized campaigns can be reconstructed through the analysis of Classic Maya hieroglyphic inscriptions and application of GIS technologies. We will focus on the texts describing several important Maya conflicts starting from the conquests of the Kaanul kings in the sixth and seventh centuries, including the wars in the Petexbatun region in the seventh and eighth centuries, wars in the Usumasinta region involving Palenque, Piedras Negras, Tonina, Bonampak, Ak’e and Saktz’i, wars of Naranjo king K’ahk’ Tiliw Chan Chaahk (ca. 693 – 720) and the victories of the last Yaxchilan kings in the late eighth and early ninth centuries. The workshop is open to those who have basic knowledge of Maya writing: some calendrical knowledge and the ability to structure hieroglyphic inscriptions and understand their syntactic components. The workshop will be taught in English.

MAYA WORKSHOP II:
"On the Warpath: Predicates, People and Places in the Eastern Central Lowlands" by Christophe Helmke & Harri Kettunen

This workshop provides an overview of the glyphic text that adorns the recently discovered Komkom Vase. This vase was found in the summer of 2015 by the Belize Valley Archaeological Reconnaissance Project, under the direction of Jaime J. Awe and Julie A. Hoggarth, while excavating at the major centre of Baking Pot in western Belize. The vase owes its importance to the lengthy hieroglyphic text that adorns its circumference, its late date and its remarkable archaeological context. This vase provides an astonishing account of dynastic events involving war and peace, verbs of motion and rituals. Many heretofore unknown actors and toponyms are featured in the narrative making this an all the more exceptional account of early ninth century political history. Texts from Naranjo and other archaeological sites in the vicinity will also be reviewed in light of significant parallel clauses that duplicate events, repeat expressions and narrative structures. This workshop is targeted to intermediate participants with prior experience and working knowledge of the writing system and the calendar. Group work on the texts is followed by tutor presentations reviewing the reading and interpretations of the texts as well as special presentations related to the themes of the workshops.
