The Sources of Japanese Classical Demonology

The Sources of Japanese Classical Demonology

Renata Iwicka, The Sources of Japanese Classical Demonology [Źródła klasycznej demonologii japońskiej], Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego, Kraków 2017.

Demons in a contemporary Japan are a very colorful and rich source material varying from the fluffy dust bunnies through haunted bed sheet to fearsome Lucifer. Little however is done to show the earliest supernatural beings – their unclear genesis and profound changes they underwent along the history. This book offers a glimpse into such early world – the complicated, sometimes mutually exclusive roots of many beings, known today as something entirely different from their originals. The book also offers the outlining of the classical ways of fighting them off – be it with rice, iron swords or… running away.
