Paweł Taranczewski, Paulina Tendera, The Conversations about Painting [Rozmowy o malarstwie], The Polish Journal of the Arts and Culture - Monographs, Kraków 2016.
The book Conversations about Painting by Paweł Taranczewski and Paulina Tendera combines the advantages of an academic publication and of free, albeit substantive, conversations about art and its values. This form encourages the reader to engage in the dialogue conducted by the authors and ensures that the book maintains its substantive and philosophical openness. The authors enter into specific philosophical issues, in each case consistently returning, however, to the main theme of this book: the work of art itself. The book also has educational value, as it shows and at the same time teaches us how to talk about art, and thus would surely be useful for more than one course of aesthetics or philosophy of art. The discussion of creativity here also becomes an opportunity to reflect on the past and on issues of everyday life.
prof. Władysław Stróżewski
Reading Conversations about Painting by Prof. Paweł Taranczewski and Dr Paulina Tendera strengthened my conviction that my views on art are close to the hermeneutic understanding of the followers circle of Martin Heidegger. In this dialogue, the process of interpreting a work of art constitutes a component of the cultural, philosophical, and intellectual experiences Prof. Taranczewski acquired in his family home. The presence of his father, an outstanding artist and a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, the lectures of Roman Ingarden, and his fascination with the philosophical thought of Władysław Stróżewski all formed a basis for Paweł Taranczewski’s further creative path. The book’s co-author, Dr Paulina Tendera, situating aesthetic preferences in the current of the Platonic concept of beauty, becomes a partner in these philosophical reflections on creativity. Conversations about Painting is an important voice in the multilayered and multidimensional discourse on the nature and value of art.
