The Cultural Context of the Conflict in Eastern Ukraine

The project is financed by the National Science Centre (Miniatura 1)
Project Coordinator: dr Elżbieta Olzacka
Project duration: November 2017 – November 2018

The project assumes the realization of research stay at the Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (Elliott School of International Affairs, George Washington University). The aim of research stay is to prepare a research project devoted to the study of the cultural context of the conflict in eastern Ukraine. In the framework of post-Soviet/Eastern European studies the issue of Ukrainian conflict is usually raised in the perspective of political science and works that may take into account cultural processes are exceptions. Therefore I plan to explore the conflict in Donbas from a cultural perspective, focusing on (1) the dynamics of the cultural conflict within the post-Soviet Ukrainian society; (2) repertoire of symbolic references accompanying contemporary events in Ukraine. A visit to IERES will give me the opportunity to consult my research ideas in an international research environment at one of the world's leading research centers promoting interdisciplinary post-Soviet studies. An additional goal is to acquaint myself with theoretical and methodological issues within post-Soviet studies, especially in the area devoted to the cultural conflicts accompanying the formation of independent states in the post-Soviet area.
