Dr hab. Bożena Gierek

Graduated from the Jagiellonian University (Institute for the Study of Religions) in Kraków as well as from the Academy of Economy in Kraków (specialisation – Economics of Tourism). She wrote and defended her doctoral thesis at the Institute for the Study of Religions. In 2019 she recievd her Habilitation degree in cultural studies from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw. Since 1995 she has lectured, first in the Institute for the Study of Religions, and from 2004 in the Centre for Comparative Studies of Civilisations. She is the author of four books, numerous articles published in national and international journals and books, as well as over hundred items that have appeared in lexicons and encyclopaedias.

Academic interests

  • the comparative studies of religious systems and cultures in a broad sense, including contemporary religious phenomena, with an emphasis on rituals and ceremonies; special interest in the death in various cultures;
  • Celtic culture, including Celtic Christianity;
  • sociolinguistics;
  • nonverbal communication.

Research projects

  • 2009-2010 – participated in the project The Thin End of the Wedge, coordinated from Northern Ireland; the aim of the project was to challenge racism and sectarianism at its roots in Northern Ireland;
  • 1996 – participated in the project Inventory of the religious heritage on the ‘holy' islands off the Irish coast and development of a care-taking strategy for the monuments during the International European Heritage Campus on Clare Island in Ireland, organised by the European Union General Directorate of Cultural Affairs.
