Zaproszenie do numeru tematycznego PJAC: Special Issue: Comparative Studies of Civilizations in and for the 21st Century

In the light of postcolonial studies the term “civilisation” sounds more ambivalent today than ever. What was once an enlightened ideal to then become a seemingly purely descriptive term in contem-porary reality echoes with all the horrors of the civilising missions conducted across the globe in the age of colonisation. Given this context can the term itself be salvaged? And what is to become of the comparative studies of civilisations that blossomed in the second half of the 20th century due to the pioneering works of scholars like Shmuel Eisenstadt, Fernand Braudel and Samuel Huntington? Can we still develop their project and if so how are we to understand the method and the concept of civilisation it relies upon?

In a special issue of the Polish Journal of the Arts and Culture we wish to address these questions by welcoming scholarly articles investigating diverse contexts of the idea of civilisation in the con-temporary world. The issues that will be explored in the special issue include:

- how the term “civilisation” is understood in different cultural contexts;

- how different social actors use the concept of civilisation for economic, political and cultural pur-poses;

- in what ways civilisational discourse is present and overlaps with other narratives in the processes of forming collective identities in different parts of the world;

- can the concept of “civilisation” be revived as a sociopolitical emancipatory ideal and under what circumstances?

- how civilisational studies are to be conducted if they are to play a vital role in combating contem-porary crises;

- how to conduct comparative cultural analysis in a postcolonial environment;

- what role the arts can play in comparative studies of civilisations in the 21st century.
